Satellite broadcaster BSkyB (LSE: BSY.L - news) has announced an increase in profits due to more customers signing up for its services.

The company added 51,000 net subscribers in the nine months to 7th March, but cancellations amongst its existing subscribers rose to 13.7%, up from 11.9%. Revenues were up 10% to £3.4bn, while operating profit was £613m, down from £660m in the previous nine months.

City analyst Colin Perry said: “These are good numbers and Sky must be pleased with the way things are going, even taking into account the dispute with Virgin Media (NASDAQ: VMED - news) , which has cut Sky’s Basic TV package from its service.”

Viewer Peter Thompson is still angry about the dispute. “I signed up to Virgin for my TV viewing and within a few months they had dropped the Sky programmes,” he said.

“Whatever the ins and outs of the situation - and I’m sure it’s very complicated - it’s the ordinary viewer like me who suffers and who doesn’t get full value from their subscription.

“They need to sort it out as soon as possible and get me the service that I’ve paid for,” he added. “I would be very wary now about getting anything else from either Sky or Virgin.”
