Nasdaq 100 Leaders and Laggards: DISCA HANS
NEW YORK (AP) - The Nasdaq 100 index rose in Thursday trading even as crude-oil prices crossed $124 per barrel and Wall Street absorbed a mixed bag of April same-store sales data.
The index, which includes 100 of the largest nonfinancial
securities listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market (NASDAQ: NDAQ - news) , jumped 15.44 points to 1,966.86 in Thursday trading. The broader Nasdaq composite (NASDAQ: news) added 12.75 points to 2,451.24.
Shares of Discovery Holding Co (NASDAQ: DISCA - news) ., which owns the Animal Planet channel and others, rose $2.34, or 10 percent, to $25.75.
Shares of construction and engineering company Foster Wheeler Ltd (NASDAQ: FWLT - news) . gained $3.72, or 5.7 percent, to $68.88.
Shares of Level 3 Communications Inc. gained 15 cents, or 4.9 percent, to $3.23.
On the losing side, shares of Hansen Natural Corp. dropped $5.46, or 15.3 percent, to $30.14 after the beverage maker's first-quarter profit missed Wall Street's expectations.
Shares of Liberty Global Inc (NASDAQ: LBTYA - news) . shed 13 cents, or 3.1 percent, to $35.21 after the company posted a first-quarter loss on higher interest payments and losses on derivatives.
Shares of Staples Inc (NASDAQ: SPLS - news) . slipped 49 cents, or 2.2 percent, to $21.44.
