DJIA Leaders and Laggards: AA HD
NEW YORK (AP) - The Dow Jones industrial average closed higher Thursday as investors digested a mixed bag of April retail sales data, even as oil prices breached an all-time high on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
The blue chip index rose 52.43 points to finish at 12,866.78. Of the index's 30 components, 10 ended the day lower.
Shares of Alcoa Inc (NYSE: AA - news) . rose $1.56, or 4.1 percent, to $39.65.
Shares of Chevron Corp (NYSE: CVX - news) . jumped $2.16, or 2.3 percent, to $97.44, after touching a new 12-month high of $97.85 earlier in the session.
Shares of specialty chemicals maker DuPont & Co. gained 79 cents to $49.33.
On the losing side, shares of The Home Depot Inc., a home improvement retailer, lost 64 cents, or 2.2 percent, to $27.92.
Shares of insurer American International Group Inc. shed 93 cents, or 2.1 percent, to $44.15. The insurer was widely expected to report a first-quarter loss, and after the closing bell said it posted $7.8 billion in losses for the period.
Shares of Bank of America Corp (NYSE: IKJ - news) . decreased 67 cents to $37.33.
