LONDON (ShareCast) - Mining giant Anglo American (LSE: AAL.L - news) delivered a 9.1% rise in first quarter copper output while platinum
production fell by 24%.

Copper production for the quarter ended 31 March 2008 increased to 159,733 tonnes from 146,387 tonnes the same time a year before due to improved grades at Los Bronces, the group said.

Meanwhile platinum output fell to 428,600 ounces after power supply issues in South Africa, including power shortages. Flooding at the Amandelbult mine also hit production, Anglo said.

Platinum remains on target for full year refined production of 2.4m ounces.

Coal production was also hampered by power disruption and higher than usual rainfall in S. Africa. Total coal production fell 2.8% to 22.3m metric tons.

Zinc production for the quarter rose 1% while nickel fell 28.5%.
