British Telecom appoints new chief executive
LONDON (AFP) - British telecoms operator BT Group (LSE: BT-A.L - news) said on Tuesday that its retail division chief, Ian Livingston, is to succeed Ben Verwaayen as chief executive in June.
The company gave no specific reason for the departure of Dutchman Verwaayen, 56, who has headed BT since 2002.
BT said in a statement that Verwaayen would step down as chief executive on May 31 and would leave the board at the end of June.
Scotsman Livingston, who is currently chief executive of BT Retail, will begin his new job on June 1.
"Ben has been an exceptional CEO whose courage and leadership has transformed BT from being a deeply troubled organisation into a thriving business with global capability and a clear strategy for the future," said BT chairman Mike Rake in the statement.
Livinston, 43, joined BT in 2002 as chief finance officer, before moving to head its retail arm in 2005.
