US pre-open: Stocks set to begin mixed

LONDON (ShareCast) - US stocks are set to begin mixed as investors contemplate oil sliding below the $100 mark but worries still persist about the economy.

Across the markets, the Dow Jones (news)
is expected to begin 11 points higher at 12,130 with the Nasdaq (NASDAQ: news) seen 3 points lower at 1720. The S&P 500 is due to rise 1 point.

Crude has continued to slide from yesterday with a barrel of light, sweet crude recently down $3.56 to $98.98 in electronic trading.

Bear Stearns (NYSE: BSC - news) ' largest shareholder Joe Lewis, with a 10% stake in the group, announced that he would like Bear Stearns to consider other deals aside from the JP Morgan offer.

Book retailer Borders Group (NYSE: BGP - news) said that it could sell its business as it suspended paying a dividend in order to pump the money into its strategic initiatives.
