Workers at four Argos distribution centres are to go on strike after voting for industrial action in a pay row.

Their union said there will be a series of 24-hour walkouts at Basildon in Essex, Bridgwater in Somerset, Heywood in Greater Manchester
and Magna Park in Leicestershire.

Unite said the action will escalate to a four-day stoppage if the dispute is not resolved.

The union, which has rejected a 4% pay offer, will give details of the strike dates in the next few days.

It has warned Argos that the company faces "severe disruption" to its customer distribution service.

Unite spokeswoman Jennie Formby said: "Our members have been working harder and more flexibly.

"Thanks to them, Argos distribution has managed to save over £10m for the group in the last 15 months alone.

"Many distribution workers earn as little as £17,000 a year for doing back-breaking, essential work for this company.

"They are already struggling to keep up with rising food and energy costs."
