FRANKFURT (AFP) - The German high-end automaker Audi (Xetra: 675700 - news) said Monday that it delivered a record 66,866 cars in China in the first half of the year, an increase of 11 percent from the same period a year earlier.

In June, the German group delivered more than 13,000 cars for a jump of 28 percent, with a model of the A4 built exclusively for the Chinese market a notable success.

"Record (LSE: REC.L - news) sales of the Audi A4L endorse our model strategy for the Chinese market," a statement quoted sales director Peter Schwarzenbauer as saying.

The A4L has a longer wheelbase than models sold elsewhere, and Audi has also developed a larger A6L model for the Chinese market, with both cars produced in Changchun, China in a joint venture with the Chinese group FAW.

"Audi has had its best half-year ever in China," where it has been present since 1988, the statement said.

The German group is to unveil global first-half sales on Wednesday.
