contracts less severely in April ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The U.S. services sector contracted less severely in April, according to a report that could raise hopes that the economy had bottomed and was beginning to recover. The Institute for Supply Management's non-manufacturing index rose to 43.7 from 40.8 in March. Analysts had expected a reading of 42. Any reading below 50 represents contraction.
