Kylie Profits From MP3 Sales Boom
By Sky News
MP3 sales are booming - thanks mainly to a partial relaxation in downloading rules.
Media delivery company 7digital.com says sales have rocketed by 300% in the past year.
Top selling albums include Kylie's X,
Radiohead's In Rainbows and Madonna's Hard Candy.
The sales boom follows the introduction of the DRM-free - an MP3 download format across the Warner Music and EMI catalogues.
Downloads without Digital Rights Management do not have to be kept on a certain platform or music player.
Ben Drury, the chief executive of 7digital.com, told Sky News: "Music lovers are beginning to realise that owning an iPod doesn't mean you can only buy tracks just from iTunes."
With the introduction of music giant Warner's MP3 catalogue, around 80% of 7digital.com's four million track catalogue is now available in the format.
Mr Drury said: "It is now clear that MP3 downloads represent the future for digital music.
"With two of the four major labels now supporting MP3 in the UK, we expect to see the whole market supporting MP3 in the not-too distant future."
Mr Drury said they are waiting for two other major labels to get on board, which he expects will happen in the not too distant future.
"We have over 1.2 million customers so we are pretty happy," he said.
"iTunes are the major competitor but we definitely see signs of that changing."
