ECB keeps main interest rate steady at 1.0%

FRANKFURT (AFP) - The European Central Bank kept its main interest rate steady at an all-time low point of 1.0 percent after its governing council met here on Thursday, a bank spokesman said.

In London, the Bank of England had also left its key rate at record low of 0.50 percent earlier in the day.

Both central banks seek to boost flagging economies with ultra-low lending rates and are also crafting non-conventional monetary policies to ward off a credit crunch that has hindered economic activity.
