Thumbs up for older dads

A survey by Lloyds TSB has found that three quarters of Brits (72%) say they don't think men should have a self-imposed biological. Indeed, post-50 fathers such as Michael Douglas, Paul McCartney, Gordon Brown, and - let us not forget - Des O'Connor
will be happy to hear that over a third (36%) of those surveyed said they thought fathering a child over the age of 50 is 'great'.

In fact, Brits think there are many advantages to older dads. Three quarters of them believe children can benefit from older dads' greater maturity (76%), wisdom (76%) and experience (75%). And over half (54%) also think advancing years bring greater patience in fatherhood. While two thirds (67%) said that older fathers have more time to devote to their offspring.

Be prepared

Many also see plenty of financial benefits to having 'twilight tots', with over three quarters (76%) acknowledging that post-50 dads are likely to have more money.

But Jacqueline Smith, head of Lloyds TSB 50+, warns: "Swapping retirement for rusks may soon become a fact of life for many men and they'll have to make sure they are prepared financially. With the male biological clock ticking on well into the 50s and 60s, many of today's fathers could be facing a playground rather than a mid-life crisis."
