VIENNA (AFP) - Austria's unemployment rate remained stable in July at 6.3 percent from the previous month, official data showed on Saturday.

A total 232,387 persons were without a job last month, up from 229,703 in June, the labour office (AMS) said.

On a 12-month basis, the jobless rate for July was up by 30.1 percent.

"The job market situation remains strained due to the economic crisis," Social Affairs and Labour Minister Rudolf Hundstorfer said in a statement.

But with just under 2,800 more unemployed in July compared to June, the hike in the jobless rate was lower than in the same period last year despite the recession, he noted.

This was also the smallest increase in the number of unemployed in six months, apart from April, he said.

According to Eurostat data, Austria retained the second lowest unemployment rate in the 27-nation European Union, with 4.4 percent, the ministry said.

The last available Eurostat figure for Austria had been 4.2 percent in April.

In the whole EU, unemployment stood at 8.9 percent in June. Figures for July were not yet available.
