Holidaymakers can avoid forking out for their Euros by choosing long-haul holiday destinations that remain unaffected by the slide of the pound, according to the Post Office.

Research from the Post Office found that the British pound has
gained value over the past year in six long-haul destinations. The most marked growth for the pound is to be found in South Africa, where it has increased in value by almost 15% against the rand, compared with last year. Hong Kong, Jamaica, Barbados, St. Lucia (Paris: FR0000036303 - news) and the USA are currently good value for UK tourists.

According to the Post Office, currencies tied to the US dollar are struggling against the pound and holiday destinations in which these currencies are used will be less expensive. In Jamaica, for example, the UK pound buys nearly 19% more Jamaican dollars than in 2006. The same applies to the Hong Kong dollar, up by 12.82% and the UAE dirham the currency of Dubai which is up by 11.53%.

Helen Warburton, head of travel at the Post Office, said: Looking forward, we believe that holidaymakers will look very carefully this year at how to get the best value for their money. We recommend that they consider not just the exchange rates available but also the living costs in holiday destinations.
